Duke Energy Renewables to Install 200-MW Wind Project in Texas

LCG, April 12, 2019--Duke Energy Renewables, a commercial business unit of Duke Energy, yesterday announced it will build, own and operate the Mesteño Wind Project, located in southern Texas. The power generated by the 200-MW project will be sold into the ERCOT market, and Duke Energy Renewables will enter into a long-term hedge agreement covering the majority of the expected wind energy production. Construction has commenced, and the project is scheduled for completion by year-end.

The Mesteño Wind Project will include 56 3.6-MW wind turbines supplied by Vestas. Turbine heights will reach 590.5 feet to increase power generation. Amshore US Wind provided development support for the project, and Wanzek Construction is the contractor. The project will be Duke Energy Renewables' fourth wind generation facility in Starr County.

The president of Vestas' sales and service division in the United States and Canada stated, "We're pleased to expand our tall tower technology and V136-3.6 MW platform. The combination of taller towers and V136-3.6 MW technology is perfectly designed to extract the abundant resource at the site, and deliver low-cost, reliable energy to the community and customer."

Duke Energy Renewables' states that this project will increase its U.S. wind capacity to over 2,500 MW.
