LCG, January 13, 2026--Oglethorpe Power today announced it has selected Kiewit Corporation through its subsidiary, The Industrial Company (TIC), as the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) partner for its new combined-cycle (CC), natural gas-fired power plant in Monroe County, Georgia. The new, 1,425-MW facility represents a capital investment of more than $3 billion. Commercial operation of the new generation capacity is planned to commence in 2029.

LCG, January 9, 2026--Meta today announced new, landmark agreements that will (i) extend and expand the operation of three existing nuclear power plants and (ii) drive the development of advanced nuclear technology. Meta's new agreements with Vistra, TerraPower, and Oklo follow Meta's request for proposals (RFP) issued last month. Meta expects these projects to deliver up to 6.6 GW of new and existing clean nuclear energy by 2035.

New York Poised to Close Last Coal-fire Power Plant
LCG, December 4, 2019--The last operating coal-fired power plant in New York is moving toward closure shortly. Last month, Somerset Operating Company, a subsidiary of Riesling Power LLC, submitted a request to the New York State Public Service Commission (NYSPSC) to waive the state's required, 180-day notice to close the Somerset Station, allowing the facility to be retired on February 15, 2020. Closure is contingent on approvals by both NYSPSC and the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO), which will evaluate if it will cause an adverse effect on grid reliability.
The 674-MW Somerset Station commenced operations in 1984. The facility is located near Lake Ontario, approximately 40 miles north of Buffalo, New York.
In May 2016, Riesling Power LLC acquired Somerset Station, together with the coal-fired Cayuga Power Plant, from Upstate New York Power Producers, Inc. The Cayuga Power Plant, located in Tompkins County, New York, was intended to be converted from coal to natural gas when it was acquired. However, resistance to the conversion arose, and this fall the Cayuga facility initiated the closure process.
The closure of coal plants supports New York's Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) requirements to to use 70 percent renewable energy by 2030 and a zero-carbon emission electric sector by 2040.
