TVA Announces Two Energy Storage Agreements Totaling 425 MW/1,700 MWh
LCG, April 22, 2026--The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) yesterday announced two new, 20-year agreements for a 225 MW/900 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project in East Tennessee and for a 200 MW/800 MWh BESS project in northern Alabama. Both projects are planned to commence commercial operations in 2029.
The storage projects are expected to provide TVA with flexible capacity by storing lower-cost electricity during off-peak periods and delivering power when demand is high. Furthermore, the systems will provide fast frequency response, regulation, and operating reserves to support growth across the Valley.
The two agreements will support TVA's strategic commitment to strengthen grid reliability, manage peak demand and integrate more resources to help keep electricity affordable. TVA states that the projects reinforce the nation's drive to expand homegrown energy capacity, strengthen America's long-term energy security and ensure communities have access to dependable, resilient power that supports continued economic growth.
The East Tennessee project agreement is with Bobwhite Energy Storage, an affiliate of independent energy company Tenaska. The Bobwhite project is currently in advanced development in Hawkins County, with construction expected to start in 2027 and commercial operations in late 2029.
TVA's Vice President of Power Supply & Fuels stated, "Battery storage is essential to protecting the reliable, affordable electricity our region depends on to power next-generation technologies. Projects like Bobwhite strengthen the Valley's energy security, increase our ability to manage extreme conditions and help unleash American energy - building a resilient system that supports families, drives economic growth and reinforces America's energy dominance."
"This project exemplifies Tenaska's ability to strategically site and develop high-value energy projects that consider grid challenges and market needs. The Bobwhite project supports TVA's goal to maintain a stable, reliable electric grid amid growing customer demand," said the Vice President, Origination & Development, with Tenaska Development.
TVA's Alabama project agreement is with Plus Power. TVA selected the project through a Request for Proposal (RFP) issued in early 2025 to supply new capacity resources needed across the region. The standalone system was developed by Plus Power's Crawfish Creek Energy Storage project in Jackson County, Alabama. Under the agreement, TVA will charge and dispatch energy from the BESS based on TVA's system needs. Crawfish Creek Energy Storage will retain ownership of the facility. Construction on Crawfish Creek Energy Storage is expected to begin in 2028, with commercial operation anticipated in summer 2029.
Plus Power's chief commercial officer stated, "Plus Power is proud to support energy resilience in Jackson County and the Tennessee Valley, a key region for America's military, aerospace, and nuclear innovation. Battery energy storage systems are flexible and millisecond-fast, making Crawfish Creek uniquely suited to meet the region's evolving needs. We are excited to partner with TVA to deliver a resource that supports economic expansion while strengthening American energy dominance and security."
