AEP Announces 702-MW Bloom Fuel Cell Project to Serve Google in Wyoming
LCG, October 14, 2026--American Electric Power (AEP) today announced plans for a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Google, under which AEP will invest approximately $4 billion to advance a new 702-MW fuel cell generation project located near Cheyenne, Wyoming. Google will acquire power from Cheyenne Fuel Cell, LLC, which is approximately 92 percent owned and controlled by AEP and 8 percent owned by funds advised by Basalt Infrastructure Partners, LLP. AEP and its partners plan to start construction this year and to be fully operational by the end of 2028.
The new, 702-MW power generation facility will support Google's growing energy needs in the Cheyenne area using advanced fuel cell technology developed by Bloom Energy. The facility is designed so as to be able to deployed rapidly and provide reliable, on-demand power to meet the needs of large-load customers. The technology generates electricity without the combustion of natural gas. Moreover, the project includes plans to integrate carbon capture technology to deliver reliable, near-zero-emissions power and follows agreements reached between Google and Black Hills Corp., effective September 30. AEP states the project marks a significant step in AEP's strategy to serve the growing demand from large-scale customers.
AEP's chairman, president and chief executive officer said, "As power demand continues to grow, AEP is bringing together new technologies and strong partnerships to deliver reliable, innovative energy solutions quickly and at scale. This project demonstrates how we are creating new opportunities to meet evolving energy needs for customers both within and beyond our traditional service territory."
