Orion to Switch Pittsburgh Plant from Oil to Gas

145 Megawatts to be Added at Brunot IslandLCG, July 6, 2000--The twenty-eight-year-old oil-burning Brunot Island Power Plant located on the Ohio River two miles from downtown Pittsburgh will get a new lease on life according to Orion Power Holdings Inc. which said yesterday it would turn the facility into a modern, gas-fired, combined-cycle operation with a capacity of about 380 megawatts.Brunot Island, a six-unit simple-cycle peaking facility currently has a net demonstrated capacity of 234 megawatts.Orion Power Midwest will upgrade three of the simple cycle units to combined cycle by installing new heat recovery steam generators, restoring an existing steam turbine and generator, converting from oil fuel to natural gas, and adding catalytic conversion equipment to minimize nitrogen oxide air emissions. These changes will add about 145 megawatts of electric generating capacity and improve efficiency at the same time. Power plant efficiency is measured as the degree to which a plant captures the energy in the fuel it consumes in converting it to electrical energy.Dan McIntire, general manager of Orion Power Midwest, said This project is the first step in our ongoing efforts to identify the most effective means to improve the environmental performance and efficiency of our power plants, and to reduce the cost for supplying electricity to this region. The company filed the first in a series of permit applications with the Allegheny County Health Department last week. The conversion is designed to meet all federal, state and local regulations for air emissions, Orion said.
