LCG, July 7, 2000--Ballard Power Systems and Xcellsis Fuel Cell Engines Inc. announced jointly yesterday that they had successfully completed tests in their fuel cell bus demonstration program with TransLink of Canada.Three TransLink buses using the Ballard-Xcellsis propulsion system carried about 110,000 passengers more than 67,000 kilometers (41,634 miles) in the test, the companies said. The next stage of the field trials of the pre-commercial fuel cell bus engines will be in California, where they will get a real workout. In Canada, TransLink president George Puil said During the last two years, TransLink has demonstrated its commitment to improving air quality and reducing emissions through the demonstration of three fuel cell buses.British Columbia Minister of Employment and Investment Gordon Wilson said The provincial government is proud to have played a role in the development of the fuel cell engine and it has come through testing by Ballard, Xcellsis and TransLink with flying colors. He added It's clear the provincial governments' commitment to continue to support B.C.'s high-tech sector is paying off.In California, the Sun Line Transit Agency will test the bus systems on their Palm Springs lines and the Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District will try them out on its network which covers the East Bay and extends into San Francisco.Through the California Fuel Cell Partnership (an initiative of the California Energy Commission), we will further validate our technology with the delivery of 25 buses over the next two years, said Xcellsis president Dr. Ferdinand Panik. Several transit agencies, beginning with Sun Line and Alameda-Contra Costa Transit, will participate in the Partnership's fuel cell bus demonstration program and see first-hand the benefits of fuel cell propulsion and zero emissions in the air. Both Ballard and Xcellsis are based in Vancouver, British Columbia. Xcellsis is a joint venture between Daimler-Chrysler, Ford and Ballard. Its parent company, Xcellsis GmbH, is a European developer of fuel cell engines for trucks, buses and automobiles.
