Detroit Edison to Try Automatic meter Reading

LCG, July 13, 2000--Detroit Edison Co. said this morning that it has begun reading 1,200 electric meters in Pontiac, Mich., remotely, using automated meter reading equipment developed by Itron Inc. of Spokane, Wash.

The company explained that the automated meter reading system allows meters to be read automatically via radio communication similar to that used in cordless phones. The data is transmitted to collector boxes on utility poles and ultimately relayed to a computer at Detroit Edison's downtown headquarters.

Ron May, the utilitys vice president for energy delivery and service, pointed out that the method "eliminates the need for manual readings and ensures that customers will receive timely and actual bills, not bills based on estimated usage."

The test program is limited to 1,200 residential and small business customers. Detroit Edison said the system provides not just total energy consumption, but when and how much electricity customers are using. During the 18-month pilot program, the company will evaluate equipment reliability, installation, maintenance and customer satisfaction.
