NRC Approves License Transfers in Unicom-Peco Merger

LCG, Aug. 7, 2000--The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said Friday it has approved the transfer of operating licenses for 20 commercial nuclear reactors from Commonwealth Edison Co. and Peco Energy Co. to Exelon Generation Co.

Exelon Generation will be a subsidiary of the new holding company formed by the pending merger between ComEd and Peco.

Affected by the approval are 13 ComEd reactors, including two at the permanently-shuttered Zion plant and the Dresden Unit 1 reactor, which is also permanently shut down. Five Peco reactors are affected, including Peach Bottom Unit 1, which is permanently shut down.

Salem Units 1 and 2 were also affected by the approval because Peco has an ownership interest in them, though they are operated by Public Service Electric & Gas Co.

The NRC said notices of the requests for approval and for an opportunity for a hearing were published in the Federal Register on March 9. The Commission received no comments or hearing requests. The technical staff's approval becomes effective immediately.
