Calpine Plans 765 Megawatts for Wisconsin

LCG, Aug. 11, 2000--Calpine Corp. is negotiating to build a $500 million, 765 megawatt power plant in Edgerton, Wisc., the Wisconsin State Journal reported this morning. If permits and approvals are received, the facility would be built next to an industrial park in Rock County.

Calpine officials were in Edgerton this week meeting with city leaders, the paper said. Meetings are planned over the next two months to gauge community response to the proposed plant.

"Edgerton is our first choice," said Mike Maley, Calpines vice president for business development, citing nearby transmission lines, natural gas lines and water resources. While some residents dont want a power plant in their back yards, the proposal has support among city officials.

"I think we have to understand both the positives and negatives," said city administrator Ramona Flanigan. Generating power year-round, the plant would provide 30 full-time jobs, she said. And Edgerton would receive up to $750,000 a year in state shared revenue from taxes paid by the plant. That represents half of the $1.4 million in city taxes that Edgerton collects each year, she said.

Having a power plant in the community could also bring industry to Edgerton, with reliable electricity assured. "And certainly were going to market that" if the plant is built, Flanigan said.
