Wildfires Attack Transmission Grid - What Next?

LCG, Aug. 23, 2000--Californias beleaguered Independent System Operator faced new problems from another direction yesterday when growing wildfires in the Feather River Canyon prevented delivery of about 550 megawatts of power to the state transmission grid.

A week ago, loss of 550 megawatts could have forced Cal-ISO to order rolling blackouts for parts of the state. Peak demand in the state is forecast at 38,809 megawatts for this afternoon, down about 6,000 megawatts from the trying times during last weeks heat wave.

Pacific Gas & Electric Co. said late yesterday that three 230 kilovolt transmission line feeding power from hydroelectric plants in the Feather River watershed had been taken out of service to protect firefighters battling the Plumas County blaze northeast of Sacramento.

The National Fire Information Center said this morning that almost 23,000 acres had been burned, up from 20,000 yesterday. Stronger winds and decreasing atmospheric stability have caused fire activity to increase, the center reported.

PG&E said the dams affected have a total capacity of a little more than 700 megawatts, but some power was being generated for local customers. The facilities affected are the companys utility's Belden, Bucks Creek, Butt Valley, Caribou, Cresta, Poe, and Rock Creek hydroelectric stations.
