Power Supply Increase of 43 Percent Claimed

LCG, Aug. 24, 2000--A top official of Nigerias National Electric Power Authority, challenging a statement that his countrys objective of achieving uninterrupted power supply to the nations 115 million people by next year was unrealistic, said that power available to the national grid had been increased 43 percent in just the past four months.

Speaking in the capital city of Abuja, Liyel Imoke, chairman of the Authoritys technical board, said that repairs and upgrades to Nigerian power stations over the past four months had increased generation from 1,400 megawatts to 2,000 megawatts.

He was responding to charges by Nigerian iron and steel minister Segun Agagu that a 2001 deadline for electric power self sufficiency for the nation of 115 million was unrealistic. President Olusegun Obasanjo, the first freely-elected Nigerian leader in decades, set the target following a series of nation-wide power failures.

Olusegun also stripped the Authority of much of its power, giving the reins to the technical board and telling it to get the electricity situation squared away in short order.

Imoke said the target can be met. The nameplate capacity on the countrys power plants total about 6,000 megawatts, but available power fell to less than 1,000 megawatts early this year. Olusegun, a former general who was imprisoned three years for protesting the previous military dictatorship, said the power sector had been left to decay by a series of military administrations that have ruled Nigeria for all but ten years since independence was gained in 1960.

Further restoration of existing plants will be augmented by liberalization of the national power monopoly to allow foreign investment in independent power projects, Imoke said.
