Reliant Plans Big West Texas Wind ‘Ranch’

LCG, Aug. 25, 2000--Reliant Energy Inc. yesterday announced it had formed a new renewables subsidiary that will produce electricity from wind power and landfill gases. The new company, Reliant Energy Renewables Inc., will enable the company to comply with provisions of the Texas electric restructuring law that takes effect in 2002.

Reliant said the new unit would build just about the worlds largest wind farm on a mountain in West Texas, except the company called it a "wind ranch." It will also place gas turbines at 12 existing landfill sites in Texas.

The wind farm will be a whopper, even by Texas standards. At 200 megawatts, it will be the largest in the world in terms of capacity and will use some of the largest wind turbines developed to date. About 160 of the largest yet manufactured, each producing 1,300 kilowatts when the wind is just right, will be placed on King Mountain outside of McCarney which is due south of Odessa.

Reliant didnt say how big the wind ranch would be in terms of acres, but its doubtful that as many as eight of the windmills could be placed on a square mile of level land. It looks like the installation will cover at least 20 square miles, and possibly a lot more.

"This is a Texas-sized commitment by Reliant Energy to diversify its electricity supply portfolio withpollution-free renewable energy," said Ian Mays, president of Renewable Energy Systems, one of the companys that will develop the wind ranch. Reliant will purchase the power for resale.

Reliant's landfill gas-to-electricity project, which will extract methane gas that occurs naturallyin landfills as materials decompose, will produce a total of 44 megawatts of power. According to Jeff Ferguson, director of special projects for Reliants wholesale group, "The methane will be collected from shallow wells that will be drilled into each landfill. The gas will then enter a closed pipeline system connecting to reciprocating engines. The methane will fuel the engines, which, in turn, will generate electricity."

Landfills included in the project are the Atascocita landfill at Humble and the Blue Bonnet landfill inHouston. Others are located at Alvin, Security, Conroe, New Braunfels, Hutto, Temple, Waco, Sherman, Kingston, and Fort Worth. All are operated by Waste Management Inc., of Houston.
