Florida Power & Light Seeks Big Rate Boost

LCG, Aug. 25, 2000--Florida Power & Light Co. said this morning it would ask regulators for permission to increase electricity rates to offset the effect of higher prices for oil and natural gas it uses to fuel its power plants.

The company said it had filed preliminary papers with the Florida Public Service Commission demonstrating that power plant fuel would cost it $518 million more in 2000 than originally estimated. Next month, the company will ask the commission for a rate increase to compensate for the increased cost of generation.

If the full amount is granted, residential electric rates could increase by as much as 13 percent, the company said. It added that is would ask the regulators to spread the cost recovery over two years in order to reduce the impact on consumers to about 9 percent.

FPL said the increase, if allowed, will be somewhat mitigated by a refund to customers of between $75 million and $100 million.
