Scottish Power Wind Farm Goes On-line

LCG, Aug. 30, 2000Scottish Power, Scotland's largest industrial concern, began operations today at one of the largest wind power installations in the United Kingdom, the newspaper Scottish Daily Record reported this morning.

The Dun Law wind farm, located south of Edinburgh, has the capability to generate 17 megawatts of power when the wind is blowing just so. According to the paper, that's enough power to supply 15,000 homes in the Borders, an administrative region of southern Scotland.

Scottish Power said the wind farm, along with two others in Ayrshire and Argyll, will help them meet the British government's target of having 10 percent of electricity produced from renewable sources by 2010.

The company is reported to have invested 12 million ($17.6 million U.S.) in the Dun Law wind farm. And while Scottish Power is interested in making money from power generated by any means, it has shown concern for the environment, according to the Daily Record.

When planning the new wind farm for Kintyre in Argyll, Scottish Power invested in a new grouse moor, so as to deflect the local population of golden eagles from the site. The grouse moor may also provide good shooting for Scottish Power executives.
