FERC Draft Gives Buccaneer Pipeline Eco-okay

LCG, Sept. 1, 2000The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has concluded in a draft environmental impact statement that an offshore natural gas pipeline from Alabama to Florida would have limited adverse environmental impact and would be an environmentally acceptable action.

The proposed Buccaneer Gas Pipeline, a joint venture between Duke Energy Corp. and The Williams Cos., would extend about 675 miles across the Gulf of Mexico, transporting gas to Florida which is expected to suffer a shortage once new independently-owned gas-fired power plants are permitted to be built in the state.

Frank Ferazzi, a Buccaneer senior vice president, said the company was committed to build the pipeline "in a responsible, environmentally sensitive manner."

The venture expects to receive final approval from FERC later this year. "The last piece of the puzzle we are now seeking is a final Environmental Impact Statement, followed by a FERC Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity," Ferazzi said in a statement.
