'Loose Parts' Force Palisades Shutdown

LCG, Sept. 6, 2000The 740 megawatt Palisades nuclear power plant belonging to Consumers Energy Co. was shut down yesterday evening after workers performing x-ray inspections discovered "loose parts" that could affect emergency core cooling operability.

In an event report filed with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, plant operators said it was conducting radiography examinations at 6:00 p.m. and discovered that the internal parts of a check valve were not in place. The valve is a check valve in one of the reactor's emergency core coolant systems.

A second x-ray of the valve determined that all of the parts were inside the valve somewhere, but not where they should be. At 7:01 p.m., operators began to shut down the plant because the loose parts could adversely affect the operability of other components of the emergency core cooling system.

The plant this morning was in "hot shutdown" mode, meaning it can be easily restarted once the loose parts are nailed down.
