TXU Unit to Buy West Texas Wind Power
LCG, Sept. 13, 2000--TXU Electric & Gas Co. said yesterday it would purchase 31.5 megawatts of renewable energy from a soon-to-be-built wind farm in West Texas. The agreement to buy wind-generated power will satisfy part of TXU's obligation under Texas electric restructuring law to dedicate a portion of its generation portfolio to power produced from so-called "renewable" sources. The Indian Mesa Wind Farm being developed in Pecos County by National Wind Power of England and Orion Energy of the U.S. will produce 82.5 megawatts of electric power when the wind is blowing just right and all the turbines are working. Each of the 125 Vesta turbines will sit atop a 165-foot high tower and have a windmill that is 150 feet in diameter. Construction was due to begin this month with power deliver scheduled for next spring.Steve Philley, TXU electric Energy Supply vice president, said "TXU Electric & Gas is pleased to add the Indian Mesa Wind Farm to our growing renewable energy portfolio. This project further demonstrates our commitment as a renewable energy leader." Cost of the power, subsidies required to make the cost competitive, projected percentage of potential capacity and acreage required for 125 turbines were not disclosed. No mention was made of additional transmission facilities needed to hook the wind farm to the Texas grid.
