Entergy's UK Saltend Project at Full Capacity
LCG, Sept. 19, 2000British contractors building the 1,200 megawatt Saltend power plant in England for Entergy Corp. of the U.S. cranked all three units up to full capacity yesterday to begin a test period before the facility is put into commercial operation, a spokeswoman for the project said this morning."On Wednesday the plant will start a 10-day testing phase before the formal handover by theconstructors," she said. The natural gas-fired plant was the last large gas-fueled plant in the United Kingdom to win regulatory approval before a moratorium on the use of gas as electric generation fuel went into effect to protect jobs in the British coal mining industry.Saltend was originally scheduled to begin commercial operations by June of this year, but construction problems forced a delay. The delays may not be over, the spokeswoman said. "Testing can take longer than expected but (10 days) is the plan at the moment," she said.Saltend was hooked to the UK's national grid last May and has been selling some power in the England and Wales Electricity Pool, the British wholesale market, since that time.Entergy has, for about a year, seeking a partner to buy up to a 50 percent interest in Saltend. Such a deal could take place after the plant is declared fully operational.
