Fitchburg Gas Wants to Boost Winter Prices

LCG, Sept. 20, 2000Unitil Corp. said yesterday its Fitchburg Gas & Electric Light Co. subsidiary has asked Massachusetts regulators to approve a natural gas rate increase that would be in effect from November 1 until next April 30.

If approved, the rate hike will cost the typical householder a little more than $14 per month, Unitil said. The company said the reason for the increase is the rising cost of the natural gas commodity and that all classes of customers would be affected.

"In this period of rapidly escalating energy prices, FG&E is working hard to moderate increases inour customers' winter gas bills," said Unitil President Mike Dalton.

Unitil said gas rates are ordinarily adjusted every six months to reflect changes in the wholesale cost of the commodity. Changes are passed along to the consumer without markup, the company averred.
