Westcoast and Coastal to Disengage Joint Venture

LCG, Sept. 26, 2000--Westcoast Energy inc. of Vancouver, British Columbia, and Houston-based Coastal Corp. said yesterday that they would disengage their Engage Energy joint venture and split the assets. The move comes as Coastal and El Paso Energy Corp. finalize details of their merger, which is expected to close by the end of this year.

Engage Energy was formed by the two companies in 1997 as a natural gas and electricity marketing joint venture. The companies said Westcoast would keep the Canadian operations and an office in Michigan and will have the right to use the Engage name. Coastal will retain the U.S. operations.

The companies said they are working to ensure a smooth transition to maintain existing contractual relationships. The disengagement, which had been expected in light of the Coastal-El Paso deal, is expected to close by the end of the week.
