Calpine Hopes to Build 500 Megawatt Wisconsin Plant

LCG, Oct. 4, 2000Calpine Corp. said yesterday that it would build a 500 megawatt merchant power plant near an industrial park on the edge of Fond du Lac, Wisc., a city at the south end of Lake Winnebago.

Last week, Calpine withdrew plans to build a 765 megawatt plant in Edgerton, Wisc., after townspeople invoked "not in my back yard" opposition to the facility.

The company is taking a more cautious approach in Fond du Lac and has already won over the town's city manager, Stephen Nenonen, who noted "Since we have very limited transmission capacity in or out of Wisconsin, most of the electricity would probably be sold in the state."

Calpine will hold a public meeting next week to present the plan, hear public comments and, it hopes, assure the community that the facility will be beneficial to it.

Steve Hiniker, executive director of the watchdog group Citizens' Utility Board in Wisconsin, said "I hope that they have learned their lesson from Edgerton. We need new power, but they need to work with the community in advance to select a site. If they don't do that, they have to be prepared for people to question their plants and possibly oppose them."

The plant would require approval by the state Department of Natural Resources and siting review by the Wisconsin Public Service Commission.
