Tenaska, Omaha District Expand Marketing Tie-ups
LCG, Oct. 5, 2000Tenaska Power Service Co. and the Omaha Public Power District, a power and management venture between private and public power, said yesterday they had added a third municipal power utility as a client for their services, which include marketing excess capacity, purchasing power and supplies and providing other related marketing services.Muscatine Power and Water, Iowa's largest municipal water and electricity utility, has selected Tenaska-OPPD to perform marketing services, joining Missouri River Energy Services and Wisconsin Public Power, which signed up with the venture in July. Muscatine has a native load of about 160 megawatts and is capable of generating 225 megawatts.Jay D. Logel, Muscatine's general manager, looked at a two-fold benefit to the arrangement. "First, the agreement assures our ability to provide energy to our customers, and second, it presents us an avenue to market excess capacity outside our service territory, further expanding our capability of providing low cost energy to our native system customers."Dale Widoe, an OPPD vice president, said "The fact that the largest municipal utility in Iowa has chosen OPPD and Tenaska Power Services is a reflection of our increasing success in the marketing services arena." His district has more than 2,200 megawatts of generating capacity to serve about 280,000 Nebraska customers.Tenaska Power Services is the marketing unit of Tenaska Inc., which has about 6,100 megawatts of generation on line and another 6,000 megawatts in development.
