Calpine Buys Out Partner in New England Plants

LCG, Oct. 23, 2000--Calpine Corp. said Friday it would buy from Dartmouth, Mass.-based Energy Management Inc. the interest it does not already own in three recently-built New England power plants. Calpine will also get a joint marketing venture.

Calpine said it would pay $100 million in cash and $45 million in stock for the assets, as well as assume about $220 million of project financing. The power plants are located in Dighton, Mass., Tiverton, R.I. and Rumford, Maine, and represent a total of 700 megawatts of capacity.

Calpine senior vice president Bob Alff said "The Dighton, Tiverton, and Rumford assets are among the first merchant power plants in the New England market, and acquiring the remaining interest in these projects illustrates the implementation of our New England market strategy."

In other New England activity, Calpine is in the final stages of construction of the 500 megawatt Westbrook Energy Center, in Westbrook, Maine, and will shortly begin construction of the 500 megawatt Towantic Energy Center, in Oxford, Conn. The company also owns a 37 percent interest in the 160 megawatt Androscoggin Energy Center, located in Jay, Maine, as part of its recently completed acquisition of Northbrook, Ill.-based SkyGen Energy.
