NYSE&G to Sell Interest in Nine Mile 2 After All

LCG, Oct. 27, 2000--New York State Electric & Gas Co. has changed its mind again about selling its 18 percent interest in the 1,140 megawatt Nine Mile Point 2 nuclear power plant near Oswego, N.Y.

The utility, a subsidiary of Energy East Corp., told the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in a filing two days ago that it had decided to join with Niagara Mohawk Power Corp., the plant's operator and majority owner with a 41 percent interest, in an auction of their interests in Nine Mile Point 2.

Niagara Mohawk is sole owner of the 615 megawatt Nine Mile Point 1 plant at the same site. The Fitzpatrick nuclear plant belonging to the New York Power Authority is also located on the property.

Earlier this year, NYSE&G said it would sell its interest as part of an auction arranged by Niagara Mohawk. Then, on September 29, the company issued a statement saying that maybe this was not the best time to be selling nuclear power plants. Now, apparently, the plan is on again.

Niagara Mohawk agreed last month to be acquired by National Grid Plc of the United Kingdom in a deal expected to close late next year.
