Braidwood Refuels in 16 Days -- This One's a Record

LCG, Nov. 7, 2000--Commonwealth Edison Co.'s Braidwood Unit 2 nuclear power plant returned to service after completing a refueling outage is 15 days, 16 hours and 45 minutes, Exelon Nuclear crowed yesterday. The unit is expected to be at full power today or tomorrow.

Never before has a commercial U.S. nuclear power reactor been refueled so efficiently.

During the outage, Braidwood personnel and specialty contractors performed more than 2,600 inspections, tests, maintenance, and modifications on a variety of components and systems. Site vice president Tim Tulon glowed "I could not be more proud of the exceptional performance shown during this outage." He said Braidwood has "moved one step closer to realizing our vision of being the world's best nuclear station."

Oliver D. Kingsley Jr., president and chief nuclear officer of Exelon Nuclear, said "Our vision is to be the best operator of nuclear plants worldwide and it is through accomplishments like this that we will achieve that vision."

Exelon has a bunch of nukes -- the 10 ComEd contributed in the merger of its parent holding company Unicom Corp. with Peco Energy Co., the four belonging to Peco and the Clinton plant that Peco took over from Illinois Power Co.
