Endesa to Gain Foothold in French Power Production

LCG, Nov. 7, 2000--Endesa, Spain's largest electric utility, said this morning it plans to acquire a 30 percent interest in French power producer Socit Nationale d'Electricit et de Termique for 360 million euros ($417 million U.S.).

The purchase in conditional upon Endesa being able to acquire full control of Snet in two years and is subject to approval by the French government. Snet is 81 percent owned by government-run Charbonnages de France, a mining and industrial firm, and 19 percent by Electricit de France, the government electricity monopoly.

Snet has about 2.5 percent of the French power production market, of which Electricit de France has nearly all.

Endesa is reported to have outbid Suez Lyonnaise des Eaux and Germany's RWE for Snet, but financial information was not disclosed. Last month, Endesa announced a 15.2 billion-euro ($17.6 billion) acquisition of Iberdrola, the second-largest Spanish electric utility.
