Southern Energy Buys 20 Percent of Philippine Power Project
LCG, Nov. 14, 2000--Southern Energy Inc. said this morning it had acquired a 20 percent interest in a 1,250-megawatt power station under construction in Batangas, the Philippines, for about $35 million. The natural gas-fueled, combined-cycle facility has been under construction since March of last year and is expected to be completed in early 2002. The project includes a 20-year agreement with the Philippines' National Power Corp., majority owned by the government, that gives Napcor rights to 1,200 megawatts of the plant's capacity.Majority owner in the project is Korea Electric power Co. with 51 percent, followed by Mitsubishi with 21 percent. Kyushu Electric Corp. of Japan owns the 8 percent balance. As part of its deal, Southern Energy will have the right to market the 50 megawatts not sold to Napcor and any of Napcor's 1,200 megawatts the Philippine company doesn't want. Natural gas for the plant will come from the Malampaya gas field in the Palawan province of thePhilippines -- the first natural gas find of commercial value in the country. Palawan is a long, narrow island separated from the Philippine Archipelago by the Sulu Sea and washed on its west coast by the South China Sea.In the early hours of October 23 1944, the American submarines USS Darter and USS Dace lay side by side in Palawan Passage, exchanging information, when a powerful Japanese force under Vice Admiral Takeo Kurita was picked up by radar. Kurita was on his way to Leyte Gulf to disrupt Gen. Douglas MacArthur's return to the Philippines.Darter drew first blood when she torpedoed and sank Kurita's flagship, Atago, putting the Japanese admiral in the water and forcing him to switch his flag to another ship. Dace followed by sinking Takao and severely damaging Maya. Those were the first shots fired in the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the largest naval engagement in history and one which destroyed the Imperial Japanese Navy as a fighting force. We have digressed, but Pearl Harbor Day is coming up.
