Weld Repair to Keep SCE&G's Summer Nuke Down
LCG, Nov. 17, 2000--South Carolina Electric & Gas Co. said yesterday that it would take until late next month or early January to fix a faulty weld found during routine inspections while its 1,000 megawatt V.C. Summer Nuclear Station was shut down for a refueling and maintenance outage."Finding this weld flaw when we did allowed us ample time to test similar welds in the reactorcoolant system, which we did and found no other problems. Now we are focused on repairing thepart of the weld that is faulty," said Steve Byrne, vice president of nuclear operations. "Our repair plan calls for cutting out a small section of the pipe that contains the weld and replacing that section of pipe," Byrne explained. "The repair is likely to be time consuming as access to the weld area is limited and the pipe is 29 inches in diameter."During the plant's planned refueling outage last month, during which operators go over a nuclear plant with a fine tooth comb, a hairline crack about as long as a house key was found on the top of the pipe. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission was notified and will oversee repair work SCE&G has contracted with Framatome Technologies Inc.The company said work has begun and is expected to last about one month. "While this outage is going to last longer than previously announced, we are taking advantage of the delayed restart to perform some extra maintenance work that was slated for the next refueling outage in 2002," Byrne said.
