Czech Temelin Trips During Cooling System Test
LCG, Nov. 20, 2000--The reactor at the Temelin nuclear power plant in the Czech Republic automatically shut itself down without incident during cooling system tests early Saturday morning, but was restarted later in the day, a plant official said.Yesterday, the plant was running at 5.2 percent of its potential capacity, up from 2.5 percent last week, according to Milan Nebesar, a Temelin spokesmanAt 3:00 a.m. on Saturday, a signal sent out during a test of the cooling system in the plant's reactor was falsely interpreted by the automatic control system, according to Pavel Pitterman, a spokesman for the Czech Nuclear Safety Office. "Nothing serious occurred," Pitterman said, adding that details surrounding the incident would be known today when the whole procedure would be repeated."There was no accident and no anomaly," Nebesar said, adding that a detailed report on the incident had been sent to government officials in neighboring Austria. After Temelin's reactor reaches commercial operation next year, work will begin to prepare a second reactor for its start-up. When both units are operational, expected in 2002, the plant will supply around 20 percent of the electricity needs of the Czech Republic.
