French Okay Endesa Interest in Power Firm Snet

LCG, Nov. 21, 2000--Endesa, Spain's largest electric utility, said yesterday the French government has approved its plans to acquire a 30 percent interest in French power producer Socit Nationale d'Electricit et de Termique.

Snet is the second largest French electricity company by installed capacity, owning 5 coal plants with 2,600 megawatts total capacity -- a drop in the bucket compared to Electricit de France, which itself owns 19 percent of Snet. The balance of Snet is owned by government-run Charbonnages de France, a coal mining and industrial firm.

Yesterday, Endesa signed an agreement with Charbonnages to acquire a 30 percent stake in Snet, with an option to increase its ownership "in the medium term."

Most of Snet's power output is sold to EdF, with a small amount being sold to business customers. Endesa said it expects to increase the proportion of industrial and commercial sales in the future.
