LaSalle Unit 2 Refuels in Just Over 20 Days

LCG, Dec. 1, 2000--Exelon Nuclear, the atomic power unit formed by the merger between Unicom Corp. and Peco Energy Co., said yesterday that it had refueled its 1,200 megawatt LaSalle Unit 2 in just over 20 days, a record for the two-unit LaSalle plant.

This morning, LaSalle was at 30 percent of full output and conducting scram time testing -- how long it takes the plant to shut down when something unusual occurs.

LaSalle Unit 2, and nine other reactors formerly operated by Commonwealth Edison Co., were folded into Exelon as a result of the merger, and Oliver Kingsley, president of ComEd's Nuclear Generation Group became head of Exelon Nuclear. The people are the same, but some of the business units have different names.

The refueling was the last of eight performed this fall on Exelon reactors. It will permit LaSalle Unit 2 to operate for the next 24 months.

The previous record at LaSalle was 30 days, and site vice president Charles G. Pardee was pleased. "This outage was the result of exceptional planning and execution by the entire team," he said. "LaSalle is now among the most efficient nuclear plants in the nation."
