Palisades Nuclear License Extended 4 Years

LCG, Dec. 18, 2000--Michigan utility Consumers Energy Co. said Friday that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission had granted its request to extend the operating license of its 789 megawatt Palisades nuclear power plant by four years.

The original license for the plant was issued in 1968 and would have expired in 2008. However, the license period included the four years the plant was under construction. As modified, the license will now run from March 1971, when the plant began commercial operation, until March 2011.

Getting the extension seems as though it should have taken little more than phone call, but these are weighty matters. "This is a major achievement for Palisades which resulted from thousands of hours of work by our employees," said Robert A. Fenech, the utility's senior vice president for nuclear, fossil and hydro operations.
