AEP Restarts Cook Unit 1 Nuclear Plant

LCG, Dec. 18, 2000--American Electric Power Co. Inc.'s 1,020 megawatt Cook Unit 1 nuclear power plant was restarted at 5:00 a.m. CST this morning, the company said, and at noon plant engineers and operators were completing tests before increasing power.

Once the reactor reaches about 9 percent power, the output of the generator will be connected tothe AEP transmission grid, the company said. Ascension to full power includes several hold points for additional system checks and tests, but if progress continues at the current pace, the unit should reach full power before the end of the year, AEP said confidently.

Last week, Bob Powers, AEP senior vice president for nuclear generation, said "There's always the potential that emergent maintenance items could impact the schedule, but if our progress continues at the current pace, we'll beat our first quarter 2001 projection."

Now, with the restart behind them, Cook's operators are planning to have the unit at 100 percent of capacity by New Year's Eve.
