Scottish Power Buys Power Plant from Powergen
LCG, Dec. 22, 2000--Scottish Power Plc said yesterday that it had purchased from rival British utility Powergen Plc the 715 megawatt Rye House Power Station for 220 million ($325 million U.S.) in sterling.Scottish Power will assume a gas purchase contract with Exxon Mobil, which expires in 2008. Taking the gas contract into account, the company figures it bought Rye House for 450 ($663) per megawatt of installed capacity, a price it considers competitive.Upon completion of the transaction, an adjustment will be made for the excess cost of the gas purchase contract, Scottish Power said.Sir Ian Robinson, chief executive of Scottish Power, said "We are delighted with this purchasewhich, with the imminent opening of our new Brighton plant, will take our generation capacity in England and Wales to approximately 1000 megawatts."Almost all of Scottish Power's generation has heretofore been located in Scotland, a condition Robinson noted. "This helps Scottish Power towards our aim of balancing, at the right price, our generation capacity outside Scotland to the needs of our growing customer base in the rest of the UK," he said.Powergen contracted for the entire output of Rye House through March 2002. Scottish Power said it will retain all 37 of the Rye House staff. The acquisition is subject to regulatory approval and a number of other considerations, with completion expected in February.
