Allegheny Energy Plans 630 Megawatts for Indiana

LCG, Jan. 5, 2001--Allegheny Energy Inc. said this morning that its unregulated generation subsidiary, Allegheny Energy Supply Co., plans to build a 630 megawatt natural gas-fired merchant generating facility in Indiana, about 10 miles west of South Bend.

The company said the $400 million power plant will boost the total generating capacity of its system to nearly 13,000 megawatts. The facility will be built in two stages, with construction beginning in 2002. Two 44 megawatt simple-cycle turbines will be installed first, followed by the addition of 542 megawatts of combined-cycle capacity in 2005.

Alan J. Noia, chief executive of Allegheny energy, said "This facility will add to our Midwest generating capacity and further demonstrates our significant progress toward the goal of becoming a national energy supplier."

When completed, the facility will allow Allegheny Energy Supply to sell additional generation into the East Central Area Reliability Region, the company said, as well as give the it greater access to other markets.

Steve Hora, President of the Town Council in New Carlisle, Ind., the nearest community to the project site, said his hamlet "is delighted that Allegheny Energy Supply has selected an industrialdevelopment zone near our community for its new generating facility. Developments such as this fuel progress in communities and New Carlisle is happy to play a role in the forward movement of the energy industry. We look forward to a long and cooperative working relationship with Allegheny Energy Supply."
