Calvert Cliffs Sets a Personal Best in 2000

LCG, Jan. 17, 2001The Calvert Cliffs nuclear power plant belonging to a sister company of Baltimore Gas & Electric Co. said yesterday that the year 2000 was the best ever in a lot of ways.

Not the least was the relicensing of the plant by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, which added 20 years to the lives of its two 850 megawatt reactors. The license of Unit 1 was extended from 2014 to 2034 while that of Unit 2 was extended from 2016 to 2036.

Operationally, 2000 was a banner year in that Unit 1 turned in an 89 percent capacity factor despite a shutdown for refueling. Unit 2 turned in a capacity factor of 100 percent, meaning it put out every kilowatt-hour of electricity its design will permit.

"Our outstanding 2000 performance proves the value of our investments in our people and in ourplant," said Charlie Cruse, vice president-nuclear energy for plant operator Constellation Nuclear. "The hard work and dedication of the Calvert Cliffs team paid off not only with record-setting results, but it also helped us earn the first renewed operating license from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission."
