PowerGen Confirms Merger Talks with German E.On

LCG, Jan. 18, 2001PowerGen Plc, the British utility that generates about 14 percent of the power used in England and Wales and serves more than 2.6 million retail customers, confirmed yesterday that it is in preliminary with German electricity giant E.On.

E.On, which was formed by the merger of Veba AG and Viag AG in 1999, approached the British company about a possible merger, PowerGen said. But PowerGen also said it had received "a number of approaches which may or may not lead to an offer."

PowerGen said in a statement "The discussions are at a preliminary stage and there is no assurance that any of these discussions may result in an offer," and E.On in its statement said the talks were "preliminary discussions about a possible connection with PowerGen."

PowerGen has said in recent months that it was interested in foreign acquisitions, but has not talked about mergers. E.On is know to be anxious to expand its European presence beyond the German borders.
