480 Megawatt Peaker Planned for Chicago Area

LCG, Feb. 2, 2001--Mirant Corp., the former Southern Energy, said today it will build a 480 megawatt natural gas-fueled power plant in Rockdale, Ill., southwest of Chicago. The six-turbine peaking facility would begin commercial operation in 2003 or 2004, the company said.

"The Rockdale location is ideal because of its proximity to major power lines and a natural gassupply and the high demand for electricity from Chicago and surrounding cities," Richard Pershing, Mirant America's chief executive, said in the statement.

Mirant said the Rockdale plant is part of its effort to have 30,000 megawatts of generatingcapacity in the United States by 2004. The company said it currently has about 12,500 megawatts in the U.S., with another 7,000 megawatts under advanced development.

Despite the name change, Mirant is still 80 percent owned by The Southern Co.
