Fire During Restart Shuts San Onofre Nuke

LCG, Feb. 5, 2001The San Onofre Unit 3 nuclear power plant belonging to Southern California Edison Co. shut down automatically yesterday when a fire erupted in an electrical switching room.

The 1,120 megawatt reactor, which had just been restarted after completing a refueling outage begun January 2, was increasing power when the fire occurred. No radiation was emitted and no one was injured in the mishap, according to Ray Golden, a spokesman for the utility.

During the automatic shutdown called a "trip" all systems functioned properly. "Everything did exactly as it was designed to," Golden said.

The fire broke out 12 hours into the restart process, when the reactor was at about 40 percent of full power. Firefighters extinguished the blaze in about 30 minutes, Golden said, and the reactor itself was never endangered by the fire.

Investigations into the cause of the fire were continuing today and no estimate was available for how long repairs would take. Golden said the unit could be off-line for several weeks.
