PG&E is Running Out of (Natural) Gas

LCG, Feb. 7, 2001Pacific Gas & Electric Co. warned yesterday that its already tight natural gas supplies would be further cut by 10 percent today after expiration of an emergency federal order for gas suppliers to sell the commodity to the cash-strapped utility.

J. Aron & Co., the commodities division of Goldman Sachs, is PG&E's larges natural gas supplier, accounting for about 9 percent of the company's needs. Western Gas Resources of Denver supplies almost another 1 percent. Both companies said they would cease filling orders from PG&E unless they were paid in advance.

A PG&E spokesman said yesterday afternoon "We've received confirmation from two of our suppliers, one our single largest supplier, that they will stop delivery at midnight tonight." He said that five gas suppliers have confirmed that they will continue sales to the utility and another 20 or more suppliers have not yet given an indication.

PG&E will have to dip into its reserves, the spokesman said, but pointed out that the company has only about a week's supply of natural gas in storage. The utility serves some 3.8 million gas customers in Northern California.
