Salt River Moves Ahead with 825 Megawatt Expansion
LCG, Feb. 16, 2001The Salt River Project, a big public power utility in Arizona established in 1903 under the National Reclamation Act, said yesterday that the Arizona Power Plant and Transmission Line Siting Committee recommended in favor of its Santan Expansion Project in Gilbert, Ariz.Salt River wants to build a 825 megawatt natural gas-fueled, combined-cycle generating facility at its existing Santan power plant in Gilbert which is about 15 miles east of Phoenix. The agency has operated a 300 megawatt plant at the site since the 1970s."The committee has taken an important step in reducing the likelihood of future California-styleblackouts in Arizona," said David Areghini, associate general manager of power construction and engineering. "Adding more local generation will help Salt River continue to serve its customers (with) areliable and low-cost supply of electricity."The Arizona Corporation Commission has the final say on the proposed plant, but last year approved a similar, though smaller, expansion of a Salt River plant in Tempe.
