SCE&G's Summer Nuke Prepares to Restart

LCG, Feb. 21, 2001South Carolina Electric & Gas Co. said yesterday it expects to restart its Summer nuclear power plant near Parr, S.C. early next month. The plant has been shut down since last October when, during a routine refueling outage, a crack was discovered in a weld on a coolant pipe.

The company had hoped to restart the 1,000 megawatt plant in January or early this month, but those coolant pipes are big, measuring two and one-half feet across, and working on a cracked weld requires a cold reactor.

During the outage, about a third of the plants fuel has been replaced and hundreds of maintenance items have been attended to, the company said., and that weld has been repaired.

" We're actually in the process of restarting right now," a company spokesman said, referring to the many steps that need to be taken before the reactor actually begins its chain reaction. "We expect it back on line in early March."

Summer is two-thirds owned by SCE&G and one-third by the South Carolina Public Service Authority.
