North Carolina Gas Pipeline Completed

LCG, March 5, 2001Progress Energy Inc., the company formed by the merger of Carolina Power & Light and Florida Power, said this morning its North Carolina Natural Gas subsidiary has completed building the 84-mile Sandhills Pipeline across the south-central part of the state.

The 30-inch, buried steel pipeline will connect the Williams Transcontinental Interstate Pipeline in Iredell County with a natural gas-fueled power plant under construction in Richmond County, south of Hamlet. Most of the line, about 73 miles, was built on an existing NCNG pipeline corridor, with new rights of way acquired in Anson and Richmond counties.

CP&L has an agreement with Williams for long-term natural gas supply for its 620 megawatt power plant in Richmond County, which is nearing completion. The agreement is for 200 to 300 million cubic feet of gas per day.

The electric company said it will add another 625 megawatts of capacity at the power plant, bringing total output to 1,245 megawatts, planned for June 2002. With the addition of compression equipment, the gas pipeline will be expanded to handle 800 million cubic feet per day.
