Puget Energy Eases Restrictions on Some Customers

LCG, March 14, 2001--Eleven industrial electric customers in the Seattle area have reached an agreement with Puget Sound Energy Inc. providing some relief from power prices that have risen about 20 percent in recent months.

The agreement, which must be approved by the Washington state Utilities and Transportation Commission, will allow the five largest of the customers to secure alternative sources of power, including generating their own. The largest among these customers was The Boeing Co.

Four smaller companies, including Intel, will pay a fixed, fairly high price for a now but will later go to a lower flat rate based on the utility's cost to serve them. The smallest customers, the city of Anacortes and Olympic Pipeline, will immediately be place on the lower flat rate.

The 11 customers had requested the regulatory commission for relief from rising prices in the wholesale power market, but it is possible that they had agreed earlier to purchase that power when the going was good.

The Seattle Times reported that Puget Sound Energy had filed suit against six of its largest customers, including Boeing, saying they had reneged on an agreement to buy power at spot market rates.
