April is 'Texas Electric Choice Month'

LCG, March 29, 2001Texas Gov. Rick Perry signed a proclamation in Austin Wednesday declaring April "Texas Electric Choice Month," and he had plenty of help from state politicians connected with the energy sector in one way or another.

On hand to help the governor name the month were Public Utility Commission of Texas Chairman Pat Wood, Commissioner Brett Perlman, and former Commissioner Judy Walsh, as well as State Senator David Sibley and Representative Steve Wolens, principal authors of legislation that gives Texans the right to choose an electricity provider.

Under a pilot program this summer, 5 percent of the state's investor-owned utility customers can choose an alternative source for electricity. During the month of April, more than 20 cities across the state will conduct a series of flag-raising ceremonies and other events to promote the program, beginning with an event on April 2 in Sen. Sibley's hometown of Waco, Texas.

"The pilot program is designed to give Texans the opportunity to find out how competition forelectric service can work for them," said PUC Chairman Pat Wood. "It also allows the State, the utility companies, and service providers to make sure their computer and billing systems work well before electric choice is fully implemented on January 1, 2002."
