Constellation Moves on 680 Megawatt Florida Plant

LCG, April 2, 2001A subsidiary of Constellation Energy Group Inc. said Friday it has begun site clearing for a 680 megawatt merchant power plant to be built in an industrial area close to the city of Cocoa, Fla.

The facility, called the Oleander Power Plant, will sell 80 percent of its output to the Seminole Electric Cooperative of Tampa under a seven-year arrangement which will begin late next year. The remainder of the plant's power will be sold into the Florida wholesale market.

"Building a peaking power plant to serve the Sunshine State is important because electric generation reserves in the state have declined in recent years," said Oleander project manager Richard L. Wolfinger. "The Oleander Plant will provide additional capacity to Seminole Electric Cooperative and, because it will increase electric generation reserves, it will also offer added electric reliability for Florida."

The city of Cocoa has agreed to supply enough reclaimed water to the Oleander Power Plant to meet at least 65 percent of the facility's water requirements.
