Con Edison, Co-op Plan 1,020 Megawatts for Maryland

LCG, April 5, 2001Old Dominion Electric Cooperative and Con Edison Development, a unit of Consolidated Edison Inc., said yesterday they planned to build a 1,020 megawatt natural gas-fired power plant near rock springs, Md.

Old Dominion had originally planned the facility with Reliant Energy Inc., and had received approval from the Maryland Public Service Commission last November. But Reliant backed out leaving the project in a state of suspension.

The plant will be built in two phases, with three combustion turbines with total capacity of 510 megawatts and all of the site infrastructure in the first phase. Construction of this portion of the plant will begin late this year and be completed in 2003. The second phase, adding another 510 megawatts, is scheduled to be completed a year later.

Under the agreement, Con Edison will own one-third of the plant and Old Dominion two-thirds. Old Dominion is a generation and transmission co-op serving 12 distribution cooperatives in Virginia, Maryland and Delaware.
