Calpine to Develop 248 Megawatt Washington Plant

LCG, April 19, 2001Calpine Corp. said yesterday it had acquired development rights to a 248 megawatt natural gas-fired power plant in Goldendale, Wash., from National Energy Systems Co. of Kirkland, Wash., for an undisclosed sum.

Calpine said the project has been fully permitted and is expected to begin construction immediately, with energy deliveries projected to commence as soon as July 1, 2002.

"Because of the more widely reported energy situation in California, many have overlooked what is occurring in power markets elsewhere in the U.S. In particular, the Pacific Northwest is facing a significant capacity shortage," said John King, a Calpine vice president. "The Goldendale Energy Center will be among the first new projects to be brought to the market in several years, and will be capable of generating electricity when Pacific Northwest power supplies are expected to be most vulnerable."

Calpine said output of the Goldendale facility will be sold directly into the Northwest Power Pool. The project will interconnect with the Klickitat Public Utility District and electricity will be delivered tothe Bonneville Power Administration grid.
