Con Ed Wants Brooklyn Plant Okay in Two Weeks
LCG, May 8, 2001Consolidated Edison Inc. said yesterday it had asked the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to give it the go-ahead within two weeks to begin producing power at the Hudson Avenue Steam Station in Brooklyn. As part of New York's electric restructuring program, utilities were required to sell off their generating assets, but the company's utility subsidiary, Consolidated Edison Co. of New York, simply quit producing power at the Hudson Avenue unit in 1997 and kept on making steam."We are not going to do anything different at the plant than we are doing now," said Con Edison spokesman Chris Olert. "We will burn the same amount of oil. We will make the same amount of emissions. The only change is that now we will also generate 60 megawatts of electricity as a bonus."Neighborhood groups had objected to starting up the generator because of fears of additional pollution, fed by reports in local newspapers. "Those reports, which were wrong, helped delay the DEC's decision. We now expect to hear from them in another two weeks," Olert said.Con Ed could have the plant churning out 60 megawatts of power in a week to 10 days after getting approval, Olert said. "All we're going to do is reconnect the electric generation equipment."The Hudson Avenue Steam Station is located on the East River near the Manhattan Bridge which connects Flatbush with the lower end of Manhattan.
