Enron Sending U.S. Families Out of India

LCG, May 9, 2001U.S. energy firm Enron Corp. is sending families of American employees at its Dabhol Power Co. project in India's Maharashtra state out of India, the Times of India said this morning.

Children of Dabhol's U.S. workers have been pulled out of the American School in Bombay and, with other dependents, were being relocated to Singapore. Security around the Americans has also been tightened and bodyguards assigned to senior executives, the paper said.

The moves could be an indication that Enron was getting ready to pull out of the nearly finished $2.9 billion Dabhol project. The newspaper said the precautions involving American citizens were taken because "there is likely to be a tremendous backlash against representatives of the U.S.-based energy company" if it terminates the project.

The Times of India said something on the order of 15,000 jobs would be lost in Maharashtra if Enron pulls out.
